Building Self Esteem As Well As A Smile

Building Self Esteem As Well As A Smile

By Boris Arbitman, DDS

There are many studies about the benefits of orthodontic treatment with regard to increased self-esteem. Prior to treatment, many children smile with their mouth closed, or don’t smile at all, because they are self-conscious about their teeth. Post-treatment, they’re more comfortable not only with their smile, but also their overall appearance. This increases confidence, which carries over to their interactions with peers and adults.

However, not much attention is paid to maximizing self-esteem throughout the orthodontic experience. That’s where I focus much of my energy.

When children come to me for treatment, they need to leave my office feeling like they’re participating in their orthodontic health, they have control, and they’re comfortable with the plan. We always create a magnificent smile, but we also make sure that the patient feels great throughout treatment. Here’s how:

The Plan: I design a treatment plan that will be successful for the child. Kids are not all the same and the treatment chosen has to work with that child's unique personality. The Experience: We make the office visit fun and engaging. Contests, opportunities for silly social media post and genuine interest in the child by my staff and myself are key to ensuring a positive experience. The Approach: I am always aware that there is a child attached to the smile. You cannot be successful without paying attention to both. Above all, I am there for kids with questions and support when they’re getting used to their orthodontic care. My goal is to become part of the child’s support system not only throughout treatment, but in the years to come.

Dr. Boris Arbitman specializes in early intervention because there are many benefits to undergoing orthodontic treatment as a child, including shorter treatment time, fewer impacted permanent teeth and reduced chance of needing to remove teeth. When children are seen early enough, the orthodontist can minimize crowding to make room for teeth that have yet to come in, help to guide jaw growth and work to correct the results of bad habits like thumb sucking before they turn into larger orthodontic issues.
